Also trying to send a questino to the developer or someone with an answer to my questions was horrible and I still have no resolution for that.
Th e APP itself is marvelous. This literally could be the best note-taking app miles better than Notability. The immediate fixes should be for the Mac app : 1 drag and drop word and powerpoint it only accepts pdf again I know that the iPad app can do that but who does their word docs on iPad. I would like to import docs on Mac and get it ready for lecture so I can use the iPad right away. Good Notes has the potential to be the most complete package if their teams care a bit.
I love this app for everything! Such a useful tool for writing notes on powerpoints and etc. This is barely usable as a "viewer". Can't select text. It drags the text box even if the cursor is already blinking. Syncing is slow and unconvincing. App crashes if try to create a new doc during sync.
App crashed for no discernable reason losing 10 minutes of note taking that I can never recreate because I was using a note app to help me remember. Preference Pane doensn't open Preferences. I shows a "Support ID". Preference are instead inside a settings gear icon in the app.
The app is clearly a port from iOS. Designed for touch screen. So mouse use is confusing and leads to unexpected read productivity killing behaviors.
Please add Undo button! There is no undo button like in iOS versions! Please add the undo button, and allow for Cmd-Z for shortcut! For me I always go back and forth between Goodnotes 5 and Notability. There are so many tradeoffs of each other but the one app that has such consistency and reliability along with a functional structure is Goodnotes. The GoodNotes vs Notability debate has been around for a while. Both are powerful tools for students and business professionals who want to use their iOS devices like a digital whiteboard to capture handwritten notes and compile detailed documents.
How do they compare to one another, and which one is right for you? As you can see, both GoodNotes and Notability offer similar features when it comes to note-taking. Though both apps make it easy to find and navigate content, both apps handle this core functionality differently.
This has to do with the way GoodNotes wants you to create notes more on this belowand it makes complete sense. Notability takes a different approach. Both methods are easy to follow and can help you manage multiple documents with ease. Just tap the magnifying glass on either app and start your search. With Notability, every note comes equipped with endless scrolling, which makes note-taking and categorization easy. With GoodNotes, document management is a part of the creation process.
You can choose between a notebook, a folder, an image, and a few other options. Creating a notebook is the typical GoodNotes approach.
Do More With GoodNotes: Understand how to use it in the iPad’s dock
After you make these choices and give your notebook a name, a new note will open and you can start jotting down your handwritten notes. GoodNotes treats every single notebook like an actual notebook. You can add pages with ease. With Notability, exiting a note at the end of a session and creating a new note serves as a breakpoint between sessions and makes navigation easy.
The GoodNotes workflow makes it pretty clear that notebooks, which are designed for longer bodies of work, is the preferred way to do things. For the record, we like the GoodNotes interface a lot. However, at the end of the day, this is a note-taking app.
These apps are designed to help you annotate PDFs, take handwritten notes, and keep track of these smaller documents. Without a doubt, both GoodNotes and Notability provide a robust toolkit for taking notes and both companies have spent a lot of time figuring out what works best for their users. Both apps take advantage of the digital workspace, allowing you to customize your environment to suit your style and preferences.
You can change the color and design of your paper, as well as the size, color, and functionality of your tools without breaking a sweat. GoodNotes shines in this area by providing a larger variety of pen types along with sliders for precise adjustments when choosing your stroke width.
On the other hand, Notability offers a unique audio recording feature for note-takers. Using Notability, users can record audio files while taking notes. Both apps also feature a selection tool lasso to select and move anything on the page, but they differ in creating shapes. With Notability, this feature is built in. Simply draw a shape anywhere on the page and the software will snap everything together into smooth, straight lines. Notability also shines when working on multiple documents.
While GoodNotes supports document tabs think of tabbed browsing when surfing the webNotability allows users to open two notes side by side in a split-screen view. This makes comparing notes much easier.
With iPadOS now supporting a multiple window feature, you can create similar functionality by opening two instances of GoodNotes at the same time on your iPad. Last but not least, both apps support using the Apple Pencil 2 or a 3rd party stylus for the iPad, so you can use your favorite drawing and sketching tools to create handwritten notes.
The built-in palm rejection and left-handed support provided by either app make using your Apple Pencil 2 a no-brainer. You can even add in a Paperlike screen protector so that the surface of your iPad feels like real paper! This was a tough one for us, but we have to give it to Notability for the audio recording and multiple note support. This blog post is outdated.
GoodNotes 5 is released and you can get to my in-depth review here :. A really important update for GoodNotes4 was released together with iOS11 at the end of However, after this release only bugfixes were released for GoodNotes4.
Noteshelf2, on the other hand, published more and more major updates, gaining pace to keep up with the good quality GoodNotes4 still delivers. Big expectations are put into the release of GoodNotes5, but little-to-none is known about the status of GoodNotes5 to date. If you are searching the world wide web for GoodNotes5, not much will come up.
However, I will try my best with this blog post to condense everything that is known so far and will update the post as soon more information becomes available. GoodNotes5 is in beta at the moment. This means no date was mentioned and this did not change until today It is known that GoodNotes5 will definitely be a new app that will be coded and developed from the ground up.
This way the following features can potentially implemented not confirmed yet :. This is the list of features that were planned end The exciting feature on the list is the real-time collaboration. You could, for example, use a note as a whiteboard that is shown via a beamer to all meeting members, while each member could contribute live on the whiteboard with their own devices.
In his video, Lars opens the Pen panel and it seems there is nothing to be excited about. As you can see in this screen shot, there are still only two pen styles Fountain and Ball pen available. The options for palm rejection and Apple Pencil are now also available inside this panel. This makes no sense to me, as these are options I would adjust once and never need to adjust again.
Hence, it just clutters the menu with unnecessary options, in my opinion. In addition, in this video we have the chance to see the toolbar of GoodNotes5. It is pretty much the same setup as we know it from GoodNotes4. Well, it all ends in speculation. I will let you know, once I know more, what we really can expect from GoodNotes5. Many existing GoodNotes4 users want to know if they need to pay again for GoodNotes5.
However, my own opinion is that if they develop a completely new app with a lot more features, then it should be worth it for everybody to pay the price to support the developers. Of course if you just bought GoodNotes4 and then GoodNotes5 is released this would be a bit different, and it makes sense to me to consider those users. Let me know in the comments below. Obviously people are looking forward to seeing what GoodNotes5 will be capable of. One feature that could make GoodNotes5 stand out is the collaboration function.
If this works seamlessly it would be a real game-changer for many teams. Personally, even once GoodNotes5 is released, I would recommend to waiting for at least one month to buy it, until first bug fixes are implemented. Of course, I will do a review on GoodNotes5 as soon it is released to let you know everything you need to make the right decision. No news yet? I want to buy it for my newly purchased ipad with Apple Pencil. I think your point for discount to version 5 for recently purchased ones is great.

Software Reviews and Critisims. Update: Printing is terrible Written by Matthewcha. Old Review: When I try to print which seems to me like the only conceivable function people would want this app forI get a notification that says "this appliction is not allowed to print.
Please contact your application vendor for an update. Also, the page where you set the print settings is so poorly optimized that when I try to set a page range, it takes a whole minute for the keystrokes to respond. All in all, it takes me about five minutes to get my notes ready to print just be cause of the bugginess of this app. If the developers would just fix this one issue, I would update my review to five stars. There should also be an option to "print a range of pages" rather than only having "print this page" and "print all.
I know this is a work in progress, I know this has been requested for quite a while, My personal opinion is that it was released too soon. I have used the IOS version in our business and personal lives for several years and absolutely couldn't be without it.
I have tried several and a couple come close but still just don'e meet up for my needs. I was a participant in the beta version of the Mac and was extremely surprised whrn they said they were releaing it as is.
I use the hyperlinks constantly in the IOS version and they are not available at this time in the Mac. In the beta version I could key text into the Mac version, I find that is missing all together or I haven't been able to locate it. This makes the Mac version worthless to me at this time.
For me, this is very constraining. I will definitely hang in there because I know what it is capable of, unfortunately, it just isn't there yet but I know it will get there. Mac is totally different than IOS is structure so I get it.
I would just hate to see you lose some people because they get the Mac and think that's all there is.Goodnotes 5 Desktop (Max OS X) - erste Eindrücke!
I love GoodNotes in general, it is the best app I have ever used for note taking. Ive been encountering an issue for the mac app because I'm not able to type my notes for some reason. It would be helpful if that can get fixed soon because I would like to take notes on my Mac app. Besides that, there are a couple of bugs here and there but those have been getting fixed with the updates.GoodNotes is a terrific app for handwritten notes.
I often need a combination of diagrams, text, and plain old doodles for meeting notes. The advantage of GoodNotes has always been its excellent handwriting recognition and export. The ink system in GoodNotes is subtly better than Notability.
It feels a bit smoother and more realistic to me. But the difference is slight and in my use not important enough to ignore the other application differences.
There are plenty of ink variations in Notability for my needs. I try to avoid using too many colors and almost always use the same line thickness. While I love handwriting in GoodNotes it always felt a bit awkward to type text. Notability makes it a lot more natural to jump between the two modes and provides some additional formatting options that actually keep me typing longer.
Notability also adds an option to create three favorite formats to quickly apply to text. The same features exist on the iPhone and the Mac but the favorites do not sync, which is a bit of let down. Still, the simplicity of having just three favorites is exactly how I work with text formatting in my notes. Simple formatting is the least of what I like about text in Notability.
The support for outlines and checklist is excellent and something that is one of the main selling point over GoodNotes. On any of the supported Notability platforms, just select some text and set the format to checklist. Tapping an item crosses it off the list. Tab indents new items and they even support formatted text within checklists.
Number outlines are also well supported in Notability. I find these particularly useful for meeting agendas.
I add annotations with the handwriting ink around the outline and later export the entire thing to my note archive in DEVONthink. After typing a date string, it becomes underlined.
Tapping or clicking the date reveals surprisingly useful options. Through a combination of folders and dividers I can create a moderately useful note organization. I use groups like projects. Groups can have a user selected highlight color as well as an optional passcode.
GoodNotes 5 - Notes & PDF
This means I keep running documents in Notability but if I ever need to quickly jump to a location in a given note, I can use search.
Notability now also supports multi-document view.
This makes working with a reference document like a PDF and notes a very nice improvement over using a separate PDF viewer with the iOS split screen mode. The markup options are limited to the standard ink tools like drawing and highlights.
However, the annotation index is helpful and bookmarking is easy. They are really just image objects you can write on top of.Since the inception of the iPad, note-taking apps have been one of the most obvious and compelling use cases for the device, but also one of the hardest to pull off correctly. The two kings of the category are GoodNotes and Notabilitytwo apps which have been receiving consistent developer attention for years now.
GoodNotes 5: The MacStories Review
Each of the apps has their own sets of strengths and weaknesses, making the choice of which to use more of a personal preference than a solid answer. Here is our breakdown of what differentiates the two applications, and the major features which define not only the two apps, but the category of note-taking apps as a whole. Plus, we also have included two of our custom productivity templates for you to get started with.
This guide is available for FREE to our email subscriber community. And you can get it right now. GoodNotes has chosen to hold true to the notebook model, offering a list of notebooks with different paper sizes and sheets of paper within. Notability has decided to trend towards a user interface not unlike a traditional notes app, with each entry being a singular note within a larger folder. Once inside a document, the ability to customize both the paper and the ink that you write with is a major component of the note-taking apps.
Some users may find themselves wanting to import their own paper types or customize their pen and highlighter color and sizes. Other features, like search and PDF import, may be incredibly important to some and go completely unused by others. This may also be the case for the more nebulous but still important to many tools such as photo import, camera support, shape creation, and even audio recording.
Best iPad Notetaking App: Goodnotes vs Notability
Finally, there are settings and platform support that are often taken for granted at this point, like security, export, and availability on macOS. Home screen: The initial view upon opening each note-taking app shows an immediate difference between the two models. Each notebook is listed in a single column or grid, with their covers, names, and last accessed dates displayed. The interface has a bottom navigation bar that features a screen for search, as well as a list for favorites.
Notability uses a two-column interface, very similar to the standard Notes app on iPad. Each note is listed in a column and can be put into folders that are each given a distinct color.
The list can be sorted by name, created date, or last modified date. This is an area in which GoodNotes and Notability differ greatly.
